In the name of Allah, Most Beneficent, Most Merciful
(The righteous are those) who feed the poor, the orphan and the captive for the love of God, saying: ‘We feed you for the sake of God Alone; we seek from you neither reward nor thanks.'”
The Holy Quran, Surat Al-Insan 76:8-9

Nabi (SAW) said: “Feed the hungry, visit the sick and set free the captives.”

OVERVIEW

The Feed the Needy Foundation is a registered PBO dedicated to providing food (in the form of freshly cooked meals as well as food parcels) to those who are destitute and needy, irrespective of what their race, colour, creed, religion or political persuasion is.

We distribute food into poverty-stricken areas with a strong focus on reaching the elderly and the very young who are the most vulnerable members of our communities.

We invite you to join us, become part of the Feed the Needy family and help make a positive impact on the lives of our fellow human beings.

You can do so by donating and/or volunteering.

HISTORY

The organization began informally 13 years ago when Anwar Sheik started distributing Haleem in Riverlea, Klipspruit, Newlands and other surrounding poverty-stricken areas. Over the years many people joined in, contributing financially as well as with their time.

They saw first hand what difficulties our fellow human beings are experiencing and how strong the need is to feed those who donate always have a regular meal. Even though thousands of people were fed over the years it was often sadly the case that the food ran out as people still remained in lines, empty bowls in hand.

It became clear that much more needed to be done – the operation needed to be scaled up from both a donor and volunteer perspective. With this aim in mind the Feed the Needy Foundation was formally registered as a PBO in 2014.

WHY

In South Africa we live in one of the most unequal societies in the world where many of us (and you probably fall into this group if you’re reading this) live in luxury while our neighbours, often just a stones throw away, live in abject poverty.

Clearly, it is on our conscience and a duty upon us to help those less fortunate when we are in a position of privilege.

And the truth is that we do want to help. But unfortunately we may perceive that there are barriers that make it difficult for us to do so. Perhaps we donate find it easy to cook a pot of food and take it to feed those who are in need. Maybe we have concerns about our security in going into poverty-stricken areas.

This is why the Feed the Needy Foundation exists – to remove these barriers and to make it easy for those who have, to give to those who are in need.

We set everything up so that you can easily help those in need. We cook in large quantities and manage the distribution of the food to the areas of need. Donors and volunteers are encouraged to be part of the group that distributes the food. Where necessary, we would arrange security as well.

VALUES WE HOLD DEAR

The food we give to others is of the same quality that we ourselves would eat.

We encourage all our donors and volunteers to come and experience what it is like to serveƂ the food yourself.

We believe in transparency and good corporate governance.

THE BEST WAY TO DONATE

Alhamdulillah many people and organisations distribute a lot of food to the poor in Ramadaan. Unfortunately people are left in dire need the rest of the year. This is a gap which we Insha Allah aim to fill. In order to do so we need your support on a consistent basis.

‘A’isha (RA) said that Rasulullah (SAW) said : “The deeds most loved by Allah SWT (are those) done regularly, even if they are small”. (Bukhari, Muslim )

By committing to a monthly debit order amount which you can easily afford (even if it is just R100 per month), your actions will, Insha Allah, fall within the ambit of this hadith. It will also allow us Insha Allah to feed the needy throughout the year.
